Trump’s understanding of American government is feeble at best, and his ignorance has allowed career Republicans to work quietly behind the scenes, forwarding their ideologically motivated, regressive agenda.
The budget proposed by Trump and his GOP cronies is anchored in absurd budget reductions geared towards providing tax cuts to the super wealthy. Important programs are being slashed so that Republican benefactors can afford bigger yachts.
Trump’s budget proposes a $3 billion cut to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Sixty-four members of Congress, including both Democrats and Republicans, are calling on Trump to remove the cut from his budget, the Hill reports.
In a letter to the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee the coalition wrote:
“In our view, the mission of the museum has never been more important, particularly as the number of anti-Semitic attacks around the world rises. Now is not the time to cut funding for this national treasure.”
The proposed cut dovetails unsettlingly with a virulent strain of anti-semitism in Trumpism. According to the Anti-Defamation League, anti-Semitic hate crimes have skyrocketed by 86% in the first quarter of the year alone. Trump’s white nationalist inclinations and racist dog whistles have encouraged the hatemongers to emerge from the shadows in force.
If anything, Trump should be proposing an increase to the Holocaust Museum’s funding. The rising hostility towards the Jewish people needs to be actively combatted. Trump, as usual, has demonstrated not only a stunning lack of leadership, but a level of cowardice that does a grave disservice to his office.
